Buying a used car in Portugal
The car is the easy part. The paperwork is where buyers get protected — or burned. Here's the order of operations for a legal transfer in the Portuguese system.
Stands (dealers)
Warranty and paperwork included
Professional sellers are legally required to provide a warranty, its length set by law. Most handle all the registration paperwork (Registo Automóvel) for you as part of the service.
Particulares (private)
Cheaper, but as-is
No mandatory warranty. The buyer and seller must visit a Loja do Cidadão or use Automóvel Online together.
The transfer process

The declaration
Fill out the Requerimento de Registo Automóvel. Both parties must sign exactly as shown on their IDs.
02.
The submission
The change must be registered inside the window the registry sets. It is safer to do it at the moment of payment.
03.
The tax (IUC)
The annual road tax responsibility shifts to the new owner on the date of the registration signature.
