Bringing your car to Portugal

Sometimes shipping your car is a masterstroke. Sometimes it's an expensive mistake with your name on the plates. Here's how to tell.

01. The ISV tax monster

Imposto Sobre Veículos (ISV) is a registration tax. It is calculated from two primary technical metrics.

Engine capacity (cc)

Larger displacement engines climb into steeper tax brackets, and the curve is exponential rather than linear. Diesel vehicles carry an additional surcharge compared to gasoline counterparts of the same size.

CO₂ emissions

Emissions are measured in g/km. High-emission vehicles (SUV/performance) can face a tax that exceeds the vehicle's own market value. Fully electric vehicles are currently exempt from ISV — confirm the exemption is still in force before you commit.

  • Ownership You must have owned the car for a minimum period before moving, as defined by the AT.
  • Prior residence You must have lived outside Portugal for a minimum continuous period before the transfer.
  • Filing window The application must be filed within the deadline that runs from your residency start date.

The technical pipeline

01

Customs (AT)

The DAV (Declaração Aduaneira de Veículo) must be submitted via the Portal das Finanças.

02

Homologation

Technical approval by the IMT, to ensure the vehicle meets EU/PT safety and lighting standards.

03

IPO inspection

A special "Category B" inspection to verify engine numbers and safety equipment.

04

Registration

Final assignment of Portuguese plates and IRN ownership registration.

The import checklist

  • Calculate the ISV using the official AT simulator.
  • Obtain the Certificate of Conformity (CoC).
  • Check the future IUC (annual tax) cost for the car.
  • Ensure lights and tires meet EU spec.
