The Licence Clock (Residency)

Triggered the moment you obtain your CRUE or Residence Permit. From that date you have a finite window — set by the IMT — to register or exchange your foreign licence.

The Car Clock (Schedule)

Governed by the car's registration date. This dictates when the IUC (tax) is due and when the IPO (inspection) must be completed. Missing these dates results in immediate, non-negotiable fines.

You generally NEED

  • IMT Registration Required even if your EU licence is valid for years.
  • IUC Payment Annual road tax, paid in the anniversary month of the plate.
  • Insurance & IPO Valid local insurance and the green inspection sticker.
  • Reflective Vest Must be reachable from the driver's seat, not the trunk.

You generally DO NOT need

  • Exams If an exchange agreement exists between your country and PT.
  • IDP for EU EU-issued licences do not require an International Permit.
  • A Lawyer for Buying A Loja do Cidadão or Solicitador can handle ownership transfers.
  • Fear of GNR The police are professional; simply provide the documentation requested.
