Running a car: IUC, insurance, IPO

Three recurring obligations, three different clocks. Learn the rhythm once and ownership goes quiet. Portugal's regulatory landscape demands precision in timing.

IUC: circulation tax

The Imposto Único de Circulação is Portugal's annual road tax. Unlike many countries where the tax is paid at the start of the year, in Portugal it is tied to the month of your car's first registration.

When: due annually, by the last day of your registration month.

How: paid via the Portal das Finanças, or at a local tax office (Finanças).

Penalty: late payment triggers an immediate fine, at the minimum the AT sets.

Insurance

Third-party liability (Responsabilidade Civil) is the legal minimum. In Portugal the policy is tied to the vehicle, though the driver's profile dictates the risk premium.

IPO inspection

The Inspecção Periódica Obrigatória ensures your vehicle meets safety and environmental standards.

Electronic-only tolls (SCUTs)

Portugal features "electronic-only" toll roads with no physical booths. Cameras read your plate (or your Via Verde transponder) as you pass. A Via Verde transponder is highly recommended for all residents.

Always verify: official authorities

Rates, intervals and penalties are set by the authorities and change. Confirm each one at its source before you plan around it.
