Regulatory Analysis

The road rules the forums get wrong

You passed a driving test — somewhere else. These are the local rules that surprise experienced foreign drivers and result in heavy fines.

Section 01 / Circular logic

The roundabout reality

Forget what you know about "staying in the outer lane." In Portugal, the outer lane is reserved strictly for those exiting at the very next turn. If you are going half-way or all the way around, you must use the inner lanes.

03 — Mandatory equipment checklist

The reflective vest must be accessible from inside the cabin, not buried in the trunk. Original documents are required — digital copies on a phone are not yet universally accepted by the GNR. Your passport or residence card must always accompany your licence during operation.

The alcohol limit

Portugal maintains a strict blood-alcohol limit, and it is lower again for recently-licensed and professional drivers. Both figures are set in the Código da Estrada — read them there, not in a forum. Enforcement is rigorous, especially during festive seasons.
